Re: .17 caliber discarding sabot prototype pics.......
Initial testing indicates that this bullet is mostly useless for auto loaders - I may revise the design and try again at a later date.
These may make great single-shot bullets though, so I am certainly going to save the remaining ones for a time when I have a bolt gun in this caliber.

I guess the main thing is the fact that the school system has no money of it's own. It does not have to operate like a legitimate business and attract customers based on price and quality. Red loctite is only on the barrel to receiver interface. All I did was find an allen wrench that would fit between the slots in the end of the flash hider and used it like a "T" wrench. Came off without a fight.
I don't like the AR57 flash hider, gave it to a friend and use a regular A2 hider now.

The bulk of public "education" (if that term even applies to what they do) is paid for by property tax. If you don't pay it, they steal your house.......if you resist, they send men with guns.
Maybe they are expecting more resistance/non compliance?

Re: Tell me if this idea is worth while.
Thanks for the info - I really didn't mean to say anything BAD about EA - they have spent time and money to develop some killer loads. And regardless of whether they do use a secret powder or not - I have nothing against it, just too expensive for me to go play with. Personally, I'm not interested i...

Re: Tell me if this idea is worth while.
Also wanted to echo Grantness on the cost savings/performance benefits - 5.7 X 28, despite being an "exotic" or "wildcat" - it is the least expensive high-velocity cartridge I load..........and I load a LOT of calibers. So, you can certainly save some money and on top of that, make the civvy FN stuf...

+1 on what Grantness said. I have been reloading for some time and AND have a software package called "Quickload" that calculates internal ballistics. This software can only tell me what it "thinks" it's going to do, so careful development is still VERY MUCH REQUIRED. Personally, I have a 16" AR57 d...

I make my own banded solids on the CNC lathe - and yes, they are longer for a given weight because of the material density. I use C360 brass, and my 58 grain .224 bullet is .930 long - the smaller the diameter, the longer for a given weight they will be compared to a lead-core bullet.

I have suspicions that EA does NOT use a "secret" powder, but that's neither here nor there - they do make awesome ammo, just not a price point where I can afford to shoot more than 100 rounds...... Oh, also - if you listen carefully on the last round - you can hear a "double bounce". Since the bolt is closing on an empty chamber, there is no drag and you can hear it slam home, bounce off the chamber face, and then close again. When I was shooting it, I could clearly feel it happen........

I have a slightly older version (3.2 IIRC) and the 5.7 is in there for sure.
QL does predict muzzle velocity, so far I have only chrono'd 5.7 out of my 16" bbl AR57 and real-world velocities tend to be at least 100 FPS slower than predicted.
