New to Five Seven reloading, where to find dies?

Post by epierce » 25 Jan 2010, 11:49

Hi I am new to the Five Seven and I can't seem to find any dies for this caliber other than RCBS which everything I've read says to stay away from them. Does anyone have an idea where I might find dies in stock?

Also is anyone using CCI 41 primers to reload this cartridge with? Thanks

^^^^

Yup, I have the custom-grade Hornady 5.7 dies and they are the cat's meow - I am VERY pleased with them.

How about the CCI 41 primers? Will they work OK?

I won't recommend a primer, but I will say stay away from CCI for this cartridge.

SNAP!

Any reason why, I like CCI in my pistol loads...

Just curious, I have never had a problem with a CCI primer so I never had a reason to change, maybe others have.

Yes there is a reason. They just don't work well with the 5.7x28. We are not talking about other applications of CCI primers.

I use CCI #400 SRP almost exclusively in my 5.7 and 223 loads. Most of my 5.7 loads are middle of the road though.

Elite's custom 5.7 x 28 Lee dies are excellent but I don't know if they are still available.

I'm using Redding dies and love them. . . .I have been using CCI SRP primers and not had any problems(they are about the only ones I can find) but have been working great for my AR57.

May I ask just what is it that makes the RCBS dies unsuitable - in particular - for the 5.7 ??
Have I been in la la land for the past 40 years ... because I have been happy with the RCBS quality control for straight wall/carbide as well as bottleneck/conventional cartridges (of course, Dillon dies seem to have the edge on the progressive presses).

Some have expressed concern over the coating on the brass ... should I be concerned about resizing /lube causing the coating to depart from the casing?

There are several people who have reported satisfactory results using the RCBS dies. The negative reports had to do with the small base die sets, but there may have been issues with RCBS standard dies (tolerances?) as well.

The lube shouldn't cause any loss of the lacquer coating. That is all caused by friction. If you polish your sizer die with a bore mop and some Flitz metal polish, it should help to reduce damage to the coating.

5.7x28 dies are a regular item in the LEE catalog now. I believe it was StateofBliss that helped get them there.

Personally, I am getting rid of all my RCBS dies - they are JUNK. Had a set of .40SW carbide dies I bought brand new and they destroyed about 1/3 of all the cases you would put through it. Same goes for a set of .308 dies. Garbage in my opinion.

I now only buy:

Lee
Redding
Hornady
CH4D

Personally, I am having great success with Lee dies - cheap, and they work - plus they come with a shell holder and I can get a three die rifle set with holder for less than a two die RCBS (that may not even work).

I have about 40 calibers in RCBS and they all do the job well. But today I returned my RCBS five seven to them with five shot and not resized cases so they could trouble shoot why I am collapsing the neck into the shoulder on 2X fired with the sizing die. If they cannot fix it they said they would credit my Card. If it continues to be a problem I will try the Hornady dies. I had really given up on this caliber, but you people have encouraged me to try again! Also, 39 cents a factory round encourages me also.
