The stinkhorns are the only ones I know of. But the stems and caps are noticably different.

Amanita virosa, A warehouse worker my father used to work with found a bunch of these, made soup out of them and ate them all.

He's dead now.

That seems to happen every spring here....at least for the last few years.
We've had a few (welcomed) waves of Hmong immigrants and unfortunately there are poisonous mushies here that resemble safe ones in Vietnam.
They do what they've always done, gather 'shrooms for a stew and a whole family is lost.
Very sad.
I only gather morels, and only eat them fresh never dried or frozen. Ick.

That was a fun hunt Irish.....we got skunked but Phil found a dozen or so....we at least got a gritty taste of them :D

Always a good time to get out of the city and walk around in the woods....dozens of deer, geese and other critters....

Sorry we couldn't come up with a catastrophe that would make a great story, all the fixin's were there but it went well. (shear pin on that '53 Johnson went, not 5 feet from shore when we first hit the water)

I followed up by shooting with Dude and his gf at Bill's.....took the Glock 20, DW RZ10, MR .40 Baby Eagle and the 5.7

Tomorrow is Marlin 338 time.

Now I'm going to crack an August Schell's Long Roasted Dark and clean guns.

Tim, you in for tomorrow?

I assure you my morels are above reproach. :D

We're getting to the end of the brief season. Dependant on night/weekend-job obligations I want to try and get out again next weekend if we gets some rains.
I'll be talking to Phil and Rat Bastard this week to tentatively set plans.

I was about 2 hours of enjoying the splendor of the forest before my first sighting.
I was about to throw in the towel and go enjoy some shooting when I found myself in the middle of a patch.

They are not easy to reproduce. During good years when people find alot they sell them for $15/$20 bucks a pound.

Man, those looked really tasty. I don't think they grow down here.

When I got back from St Thomas USVI, I got some of the last of the fresh Stone Crabs (season closed May 15th). And just today I had some early season Lychees.

I just gotta catch a snook before that season shuts down in 10 days.

BTW, we do have psilocybe cubensis, but I ain't into that Bullshit.

Llagoud my friend found a little over a hundred about 15 miles west of where you hunted. Im hoping for a little rain and the next few days might be highly successful. I am looking at drying the mushrooms, I heard it's easy to ruin them if you don't cook them first before freezing. Here is a decent site to visit if you hit the mother load. i've done research and it seems like drying them in the oven, and not freezing, is the way to go.

Razzlefrakkin'frikafrakkin.....grumble.....we have only had 1/2 inch of rain here all month.

I had to work all last weekend but may try to browse again if we get the predicted rains Sunday....otherwise the season is near over.

I'll be in Fairibault next weekend, then Waseca...I'll look around but that may be it for us.

I bet the folks in Rochester/LaCrosse area have tons of them.

And no, to the best of my knowledge no one has ever been able to domesticate the Morel.
Most hunters try to encourage the spread by using onion bags for collecting to let any spores free, and tossing the rinse water to an area that could support them, but if someone did domesticate them I think they would lose some of their allure.

Hunting the morels is like golf....or disc golf.....or any other sport that involves walking and talking with old buds and brief exertions followed by walk and talk....and a tumble in the briar....and a walk and talk....

Phil said [hi Irish, and] they have come close to figuring out the morel cycle.

The value of the morel season has always been the rare exclusive appearance for a wee bit that scientists cannot simulate....the morels resist domestication like a champ.

This is dated 2002....

http://www.morelfarms.com/discovery.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On April 23, 2002, after taking thousands of photos, Stewart finally captured the detailed microscopic pictures that he was searching for, the hyphae of the morel fungus growing from a single spore and entering the root of an ash tree, see picture attached.

The actual discovery, in laymen’s terms, can be outlined in three parts as follows:

1. The morel fungus infects the roots of certain trees and plants.

2. During the course of his experiments Stewart Miller discovered that trees that have been inoculated with the morel fungus grow faster and are healthier than those that are not inoculated. So, the fungus helps the tree ingest nutrients and moisture from the soil thereby helping it grow, while the fungus enjoys living and expanding inside the tree roots while ingesting the sap. The second discovery is that there is a mutualistic or symbiotic relationship between the fungus and the tree.

3. The third discovery answers the question, “How and when does the fungus develop into a morel mushroom? Stewart Miller coined the term “symbiotic disruption” to explain this event. A dying or dead tree stimulates the fungus inside it, causing it to withdraw from the roots, thereby forming hardened nodules below the ground called “sclerotia”. These sclerotia eventually swell in size with sufficient water and warmth and the morel mushroom eventually pops up through the ground in the spring. When an inoculated tree is healthy the fungus does not want to leave its happy home. Its not until the fungus experiences symbiotic disruption from its' happy home that causes it to withdraw from the roots of the dying tree or plant.
Recently dead trees=morels.

Well hell, we knew that already didn't we?

*edit, murdering trees is OK. As long as it's to draw out the morels.

I've been hanging around, just don't post much. It's plenty moist around here too, but the constant wind is taking care of that. Last year the season was so late that they were hidden by the undergrowth.

Some from last year.

I went out last Friday and only found some fresh shelf mushrooms. We had some rain and warmer temps recently so I'm going to try again tomorrow. The undergrowth is getting taller and will make them harder to find. I know last year they were still being found about this time, the one by the Pepsi can was found 5/15.

Hey Jim, I plan on being in your parts May 26th. Should I bring the rifles and ammo that you haven't shot yet, maybe we can wrestle up some morels. Just a thought. ;)

:thumb: Give me a call when you're in the neighborhood.

Edit: Better call ahead, I just got some coffee in me and realized that is Memorial Day Weekend. I have some as-yet unscheduled responsibilities with the RWF Cemetery Assn. Probably the 27th or 28th but not sure yet.

Breakthroughs in discovering the lifecycle and how to encourage propagation are still happening too.
This is kinda big news if it works.

I'm going to try farming some stump mushrooms too....

I've got plenty of stumps around the yard. I'd rather use them than try to remove them.

It's been raining here all week and supposed to be 80 this weekend. I think it will be an early season this year. I can almost smell them now. :D

P.S. You beat me to it LLagoud, I was going to dredge this up the other day but didn't.

Found some yesterday. It looks like the season is about done here. We got about 2 1/2 pounds in about 3 hours.

 Very nice!

I was taking a break today and decided to take a quick peek out back.
Just as I was getting ready to come back in empty handed I saw one...then another...then another....then another....
I was standing in the middle of a patch with 5-8 pounds of fresh mushies.

This is the first time Mo has had fresh morels.
I made her breakfast of Apple-Cinnamon bacon wrapped and a batch drenched in butter, drug through flour and fried in the bacon grease.
She said "OMG these are good" :thumb:

These have been halved for drying and I set aside a pound or so for a coworker that makes an awesome morel quiche...and shares. :D

I'll head back to the other spots where I usually find them this afternoon. I didn't make it that direction from the house yesterday.

Interesting idea. I have not heard of anyone doing a bacon wrap. A coworker of mine breads (cracker crumbs) and lightly cooks them and then freezes them for their super bowl party. He says they are quite good in the middle of winter.

I just found another patch. I backed away slowly and don't think they saw me.
They were still giggling as I backed away so I'm pretty sure they won't run.
I'm going to take Mo out later and let her "find" them. :thumb:

Right out of the ground IS tasty......but after a soak when you see how many slugs and bugs flee for air.....I like to at least give them a rinse before chomping.
(slugs and bugs POOP in them!)

Just found another dozen goldens. It's a good year for 'em. :thumb:

Nice find. We've got rains for Weds/Thurs/Fri here.
After that I'll head down to the places where I used to find a ton of Greys and Goldens.
So far I haven't seen any in those areas but they usually put out a few pounds a year.

edit, add: Mo found her first morels all by herself! I shouldn't have been surprised. She pointed to three good size goldens right by my feet that I had missed. :D

OK, I'm from our west and have never even seen a morel. They look and sound awesome, but I have to qualify the above recipe. ANYTHING wrapped in apple-cinnamon bacon, drenched in butter, drug through flour and fried in bacon grease would be divine. I'm working up an appetite just typing this. I think I will go grab some prickly-pear fruit, or something native to this area and try that recipe...

Prickly-pear fruit, or tuna, goes well with the Agorita berries that are ripening as I type this.

Try it in a blend with muddles Agorita berries and Wood Sorrel.

It's going to be basically the organic, no-fat, low-calorie snack.

The total opposite of the very Western-style Apple-bacon-butter! :D
