Best Dies?

Post by Grantness » 19 Aug 2008, 17:48

Which dies should I get for 5.7x28?

My MidwayUSA catalog has Redding steel 3-die set (looks like a rip off at $105) & RCBS steel 3-die set ($50.99), no Lee or Hornady

found these elsewhere:

Hornady's series 4 full-length 2-die set ($56.27)

RCBS 11701 full-length 2-die set ($51.79)

I know Lee makes some dies, but I cant find any companies that are selling them, just ebay.
Google keeps giving me links to the fivesevenforum

are the Lee dies only for certain Lee presses? If not, are they any better or worse than Hornady's or RCBS's?

...and yes I'd appreciate it if you could send me his email.

From what I've heard they're pretty much the best you can get. I believe MO uses them on most of his presses. I'll PM you his info.

+1 on the Hornady dies. If you load a lot of flat based bullets, you'll appreciate the drop down stem that helps hold the bullet in place. As with all new dies, I would still recommend polishing the mouth of the die. Ryan recommended polishing all contact surfaces, including the expander ball.

The posts in the deep dark past indicated that some handloaders preferred the Redding size die for getting the shoulder back more nearly to factory new ammo spec. I haven't had a single reliability issue using the Hornady dies so I'm sure this is just a personal preference thing.

There is nothing wrong with Lee dies. I use them for all other bottleneck cartridges and 44 Mag. They are a great value. I just don't have any experience with them loading 5.7.

I have had very good results with the Lyman 3-Die Set 5.7x28mm FN from Midway. I also have the Lee set.

Is that a 2 or 3 die set? If it's a 2 die set, what die is it "missing"?

Thanks,

Shaun

I've got 4 different sets in 5.7x28. The RCBS are crap. Only one is still ever used, and its the decapping die, which was a pain to find just the right sweet spot that didn't push in the neck of the case. I've being using the lee dies on the 550B.

Two die sets arent necessarily missing anything. They usually combine full-length sizing with decapping and the other one seats the bullet (and possibly crimps). Three dies sets often have a seperate neck sizing die which is unnecessary when u have a full-length die.

I wish someone would make carbide dies for the 5.7x28!! Applying case lube takes up 80% of the time. Can anyone tell me how well the spray-on One Shot works with 5.7x28? Someone told me they get more stuck cases with it than with standard hand-applied case lube.

One Shot works great, never had a problem with it.

Just make sure you give the One Shot time to dry.

+1 on what LK45 said. It only takes about two minutes and they are ready to be sized.

When I use OneShot on pistol and 5.7 cases, I put about 100 to 200 in a gallon sized Ziplock bag. I give it about a one to two second spray, close the bag and rotate it for 15 to 20 seconds. If I'm worried there isn't enough lube on them, I give them another short blast and tumble again.

I haven't had a stuck case yet.

I usually put 50 cases in a tray and spray @ a 45 degree angle, rotate tray and give it another quick spray.

That's what I do. Be sure to give it a couple minutes to coat the case completely.
